Give Us Defined Contribution, Say Workers in Survey

Almost 3 of every 4 employees in Fortune 1000 companies say they think buying their own health insurance using an employer's defined contribution is a good way to select health coverage. KPMG Peat Marwick, the consulting and accounting firm, surveyed more than 14,000 workers, as well as 103 senior executives. More than half of the managers agreed that defined contribution was a good idea.

Surveyors did not ask if people preferred defined contribution to the way they now get health benefits — they only asked if employees would be interested in receiving health coverage in this manner.

Despite the fact that senior executives seemed warm to the concept, 93 percent said they were satisfied with the current benefits options their companies offer.
