Women age 65 and older are the biggest users of antidepressants, but use is up across all categories, according to a report by Medco called America’s State of Mind. The PBM reviewed prescription drug claims for more than 2 million people to gauge the use of mental health medications between 2001 and 2010. Men, women, boys, and girls are using more mental health drugs.

The most commonly used mental health medications are antidepressants and, again, more women than men utilized them in 2010. “Men’s use of antidepressants is almost half that of women, but has also been on the rise, with a 28 percent increase over the past decade,” says the study.
